Cheyenne had her 1 year post chemo scans in July. She was able to do the MRI(about 40 minutes) without sedation. This girl amazes me! Her determination surpasses that of an average adult. Its probably that same determination that frazzles and exasperates me too ;) We received her results last week and the Doctors are happy with her scans and with her progress. 1 year cancer free.
Cheyenne is proudly sporting a new pair of purple glasses. It has took some determination and a few apparatices later but I think we finally have them staying on her face straight. (Cheyenne's surgery to remove the tumour left her ear displaced making this a trying job) Cheyenne is looking forward to September and going into grade 1.
These were her 9 month post chemo scans. Cheyenne did great at her scans the other week. The sedation nurse even suggested that we try her unsedated for the MRI next scan. They have special goggles that she could wear and watch a movie during the MRI.
Her scan results were clear. There is spot where the radiation has caused damage in the form of bone thinning. The doctors will continue to watch this area.
Yesterday we received a call from the hospital to book her port removal surgery. We were able to get a cancellation for next tuesday at 12:30. This should be a simple procedure, and if all goes well we will be able to go home afterwards.
Thanks to all who have kept us in your prayers.
We were able to see a few friends when we went to clinic Monday and are happy to pass on that Crystal is 1 year cancer free.Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-71111932467319355822014-04-13T22:05:00.002-04:002014-04-13T22:05:48.882-04:00Our new addition and prayer requestWe are proud to announce our new little blessing. Gracelynn Alexis was born April 2nd shortly after noon. She is a very content baby, and her siblings are enamoured by her.

Cheyenne had her CT and MRI the beginning of the month. . These are her 9 month post chemo scans. We head down tomorrow for results. Please keep us in your prayers. Cheyenne is scheduled next week wednesday and friday for her 9 month post chemo Ct (chest), and MRI (head). She will also have her routine bloodwork done at the same time. Once we receive her results back they will reschedule her port removal. We have had a couple chances to take a cancellation but both times Cheyenne had plans and I really felt that she has had to miss things for appointments and this wasn't on my list of priorities.
Cheyenne also has a follow-up booked with the orthopedic surgeon this thursday. This is to watch the side effects from her neuropathy that the chemo caused. We do notice that she still walks on tip toes, but they are more concerned at this time of her knock knees.
Cheyenne also went to visit the opthamologist over the March break. They are going to continue to monitor her every 3 months. Her one eye still wanders at time, however they would rather wait to see if it will correct itself over time.
I will try to post an update once we get her results. I anticipate those the 2nd week of April.
It has taken me 4 attempts to get logged in. If it works on the PC, then it wont work on the tablet and vice versa.
Last month Cheyenne had her 6 month post chemo tests. This included bloodwork, a chest CT and an MRI of her head. We spent last monday in clinic getting our results. The oncologist was very pleased with Cheyennes progress over the past 3 months. There previously was an area of concern on her MRI that was thought to be post operative scar tissue or damage from the radiation. This has resolved itself. However another area was detected and at my insistance the doctor personally went down and had a meeting with the radiologist and another specialist and determined it was not a recurrance but is thought to be a distorted blood vessel. This could be caused from radiation damage, but is most likely from Wyatt and Cheynne smacking heads the week before her MRI. We will have to wait until her next scans in April to know for sure, but I have peace about it for now.
Cheyenne is headed to McMaster today for her pre-op to have the port removed next Wednesday. Please keep her in your prayers. Although it seems to be a fairly easy procedure, it still is a surgery. And for Cheyenne, there seems to be an emotional attachment to her chemo accessories.
The last couple weeks have had a lot of ups and downs emotionally. We get so attached to our friends at the hospital, they become a part of our families.
I'll start with the positive news, Collin finished his last inpatient antibody therapy treatment in hospital.
Jamshid, who is the same age as Cheyenne, was found to have a tumour in his brain at his post chemo scan. He underwent surgery to have it removed Monday and will proceed with radiation once he is healed.
For an update on Browyn, go here.
Today is the funeral of Austin, a fellow patient from McMaster who passed away last week.
Last week Josiah, was diagnosed with leukaemia. In April 2012, David went to Mexico to help the Dyck family with building the new hall. They have been missionaries in Mexico for the past 9 years. They were up visiting family in Ontario when they got Josiah's diagnosis. They no longer have OHIP coverage, and are Josiah is loking at 2-3 years of treatment. He is currently being treated in London. I believe they are setting up a trust fund to help with his healthcare costs.
Please keep all of our friends in your prayers. And please keep Cheyenne in your prayers as she has her port removed next wednesday. Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-80178597364004942312013-12-12T00:52:00.006-05:002013-12-12T00:52:47.645-05:00Childrens Wish - Part 5 and updateI realize that it has been a long time since I have updated the blog. We have been busy lately and it slips my mind...frequently. This past Friday Cheyenne had a port flush at Mac. We didn't see the oncologist. That appointment is February 3rd after her MRI(January 20th) and CT(January 6th). She will have a physical, bloodwork and we will get her scan results then. Cheyenne was also set to see the plastic surgeon. Dr Choi has a special place in our hearts. He is always so compassionate towards our concerns and even towards how Cheyenne feels about decisions that have to be made. He was so pleased with her healing, and amazed at how nicely her hair has grown in. Because she had a scalp rotation, there is a chance that her hair doesn't lay flat and sit nicely(yes I know this is minor in the grand scheme of things). Dr Choi's nurse, Brenda was so happy to be able to give Cheyenne hair clips out of the treatbox.
Monday afternoon saw us back at Mac to see Dr McLean. He is our ENT. He did the nerve mapping for Cheyenne's surgery. He now follows up watching for nerve damage, and issues related to her ear. This can be because of the radiation and also her ear being displaced. Dr McLean and Dr Choi both agree that the longer we wait before she has the second surgery to place her ear the better.
Tuesday morning we went to visit Dr Sabri, her opthamologist, also at Mac. Cheyenne has some vision issues related to her chemo that haven't resolved yet. Her one eye turns in. They have watched this for 9 months so far. She will go back in March for a different test(couldn't do it after they dilated her pupils) and that will determine if she gets glasses or not. She was pretty bummed. She wanted a pair of glasses.

Part 5 of our Alaskan trip
Friday was spent in Juneau, Alaska. For our port adventure we headed out on a catameran to go whale watching and look for wild life. Interesting fact about Juneau, there are only 2 ways in, by boat or plane. This is the capital of Alaska and homeplace of Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska.
We spent the majority of Wednesday at the hospital for various appointments. The first was with the orthopedic surgeon. Because chemo can affect their nerves, it often alters how they walk. Originally Cheyenne was toe walking, and they were keeping an eye on this. Lately she has been knock kneed(not sure of the actual term for this). This seems to be more of a concern to the doctor so she is will be watching her closely. We then headed up to clinic to have Cheyenne's port flushed, bloodwork done and results from her scans. Everything was clear and the doctors are pleased with her progress. They asked for some pictures of Cheyennes bump at various stages because they are using her for a case study at an upcoming conference on Rhabdomyosarcoma. We then sat in the pre-op clinic for a long time. The kind anaethetist told me that I can skip these appointments as long as her medical status doesnt change. Thank-you! Cheyenne's scans have now changed to every 4 months for the next year. Thank you to everyone who kept us in your prayers. I would have to say that this was the hardest set of scans and waiting for results thus far. The emotional toll was hard. I guess it is the knowing that she is now off chemo and there is a high chance of recurrance. Its hard not to let those thoughts take over.
We set sail from Vancouver at about 4pm Monday afternoon. It was very busy on the ship between settling the kids in and trying to figure out where everything was. The time change (we gained 3 hours when we flew to Vancouver) was hard on us all. We settled into bed early that first night.

Tuesday came bright and early and with it came sea sickness. The kids never seemed bothered but Dave and I spent the majority of the day trying to sleep or in the washroom. I have no pictures of Tuesday, sorry. Tuesday night we gained yet another hour (4hours total) of time.

Wednesday was a better day, we travelled the inside passage where the waters seemed calmer and the speed a little slower. The travel was made slower by the blanket of white fog. By 1pm the fog had lifted and we were on track for our first destination. We arrived at Tracey Arm, Alaska around 2pm. These pictures do no justice to the beauty and pure, untouched creation. The water is so clear.

We purchased a disk of the pictures that the professionals took while we were on the cruise. But when we got home, realized that they had only included one of our rooms on the disk. The majority of the pictures were under the other room #. We contacted them but havent heard back. Hence, no picture of the family.
It has been a busy couple weeks of appointments. Cheyenne has had all of her scans and we are going next wednesday for scan results.
shirts for the family, stuffed animals for the kids, luggage tags, a camera....

and airplane tickets for somewhere special.
We were packed and ready to go. We spent the first night in a hotel at the airport. The kids didnt sleep much and neither did we. I was so scared of sleeping in. We had to be at the terminal for 4am. I was glad we packed (somewhat) light. 4 suitcases and we all had a carryon. The kids had never been on an airplane. To say they were excited would be an understatement.

I realize you are all probably wondering why the blog has been so quiet. We have been very busy the past month and I admit I neglected keeping you all in the loop. Although for obvious reasons I didn't really want to broadcast when my house would be vacant either.

The summer started out busy and kept right on marching that way. We had the opportunity to go to Camp Trillium for a week. This camp is for children and their families who have been effected by childhood cancer. We had a great time and they think of everything to make it enjoyable.

This friend stayed with them from 8am until bedtime. They had tons of activities planned. Note to self-dont take decent clothes next year. The kids have fun, and they get really messy.

As a woman, I enjoyed having someone else make the meals and do the dishes. The food was great and they have some really cool chants and songs. One of their awesome things is that they make a cake for each family who has finished chemo in the past year. At the last lunch they serve these 'No more chemo' cake. They have a huge banner and the councellors are singing.

Its going to take me a couple blog posts to catch up so I will give you an update on Cheyenne now. Her energy is coming along in leaps and bounds. She still tires easily and this is something we have to watch now that she has started school again. Her hair is growing thick and its about the length of a boys cut now. She can almost keep a hair clip in it.

Her next appointment to get her port flushed is September 20th. At some point soon she needs blood work done also. They are doing a repeat echocardiogram of her heart. She had one done in June, everything looked fine and havent gotten a reason as to why it needs repeated. Her CT is booked for October 3, and her MRI is October 10th.

Please keep us in your prayers during this time. The anxiety surrounding the scans is hard on Cheyenne and us. This one is even harder because she has been 3 months off treatment.

I would also ask that you keep my brother in your prayers as well at this time. Peter has been admitted to hospital with a serious blood infection. He has made great improvements since they changed his antibiotic tuesday, and will probably stay in hospital til early next week.
Life has been busy so I will try to capture the past weeks in one post.

A couple weeks back we were able to go camping for the weekend in Selkirk. It was a nice clean and open park but the beach was rather stoney. Either way, we had a great time out with just the 6 of us being a 'ordinary' family. The kids had a great time at the beach, riding their bikes and having a campfire.

We have a had a few appointments with the Oncologist and as of last thursday the NG tube came out! Cheyenne had gained 2.5 pounds in 2 weeks and much to her frustration Andrea pulled it out. She yelled at her 'Now I have to take my medicine in my mouth'. I have figured out how to successfully get her meds into her, though as her taste returns she may figure it out. For now ignorance is bliss as she is perfectly happy thinking that she no longer has to take medicine.

Everything was good, and no evidence of any tumour. They were able to tell by her MRI that she has a sinus infection. She has had a runny nose the past week so we have to keep an eye on it and if she develops a fever then we are to head in for antibiotics and observation.
Happy Canada Day everyone. We had a great morning out at the Lynden Canada Day Party. We went in David's work truck with the kids. They loved the idea of it until Cheyenne noticed that people were looking at her. That was enough for her.
Last week was a busy one. Monday started out with a class trip for Wyatt and Cheyenne to the Twin Valley Brantford Zoo. They had a great time despite the drastic heat and humidity.
Tuesday morning we headed off to the hospital for Cheyenne's CT appointment. The hospital is in the midst of their construction so we were sitting in the old CT area for a bit before someone noticed us and sent us in the right direction. Cheyenne was great and went in by herself and we were done in about 10 minutes.
Wednesday was a special day at school for Cheyenne. You may remember that last week there was a picnic at school and a bakesale also to raise money for The Bravery Bead Program. The school had a closing assembly where they announced the total raised and presented the cheque. The money was donated to McMaster in Cheyenne and Mateo's name. Thursday was the last day of school so there was lots of excitement around the house. Knowing Chey's test was later in the day I let her stay up late so I could get some snacks into her and then hopefully she would sleep in a bit friday morning. So much for my plans. Shortly after 10:30pm I received a call from the hospital that there had been a cancellation and Cheyenne could have her MRI at 815 instead of 1245. So it was an early morning up and going, dropping kids off and heading to clinic to get accessed for the MRI. Once her port is accessed. the nerves kicked in. As we headed down the hall to MRI, she started to cry and say that she was scared. Once we headed in we kept to the usual pattern. Cheyenne won't lie down to get sedated, instead I sit on the bed with her and hold her 'til she falls asleep. The MRI usually takes about an hour and then it takes some time for her to wake up.
While in the waitingroom I met a mother whose son was getting an MRI also. Little Danny is 3 and had a brain tumour(benign) removed in March. Because it was non-cancerous he didn't have any treatment but is monitored every 3 months for growth. Please keep this little boy in your prayers.
We head back to clinic on Friday. Her counts was ok last week, but it could still take time for her cloodwork to stabilize. Her platelets are still high, and her haemoglobin is on the low end.Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-38970137574564096982013-06-22T10:50:00.001-04:002013-06-22T10:52:47.222-04:00The past few weeks - June 22, 2013The last couple weeks have been busy, with something going on almost daily. Welcome to the summer.
Last week Cheyenne had a small celebration with a few girls for her 5th birthday. They had alot of fun decorating cupcakes and playing together. It took Cheyenne about a half hour to actually join in and play. The first bit she just watched quietly from the couch.

Cheyenne had her clinic visit thursday, her counts were good, but we knew that they would be dropping in the coming week from her chemo. Earlier in the week she was able to join her classmates at school for a couple days. She still puts up a fuss getting on the bus but she is slowly understanding that I am not backing down.

Last friday night we were excited to be able to attend the Relay For Life in Waterdown. We missed the Cambridge one because of her admission. We walked the Survivor lap with Cheyenne. I dont think she understood what all it was about, but she is excited to have her own team next year. Just looking for an appropriate team name.

On Saturday (Cheyenne's actual birthday) we headed to Marineland with Help A Child Smile. I would put pictures up but it takes a couple hours. Cheyenne was hilarious and no fear on the rides. Dave and I were a good team. He did the height rides and I did the ones that spin. Im not saying I can handle the spinning ones(we have learned Brielle HATES them all), but if you close your eyes and tell yourself to get through it, it makes it easier. All joking aside we had a great time as a family and it was fun to bump into the other oncology families from the hospital, in a better setting.

This week Monday Cheyenne's School held a picnic in honour of her being done her Chemo. The kindergarten families donated baked goods and money was raised for the Bravery Bead Program. It was amazing to see the support and a great time. Wednesday they are having an assembly and the final tally will be announced.

On Tuesday Cheyenne had to go see Dr Sabri for her follow-up appointment with her eyes. She hates the dilation drops but because there has been some concern with her tracking and her one eye crossing, they have to be sure that there is no growth behind the eye, and no damage to the optic nerve. We had it checked 3 months ago, and her follow-up was now booked for 6 months. Everything looked great.

While we were at the hospital Tuesday Cheyenne was acting lethargic and not herself. The kind of behaviour that usually means a fever is brewing. We had her checked out at clinic and went home. She has had low grade fevers off and on until yesterday. It finally broke last night. Her bloodwork yesterday showed she was neutropenic and again we were given orders to watch her closely. I can usually tell by how she is acting how her counts are. If she continues to improve then she will be able to attend her class trip monday.

In clinic yesterday we had a final hip hip hooray from the nurses, parents and other kids. I never taped it, but there wasnt a dry eye in the room. We also had some of our friends join us for it. Crystal and her mom Ida travelled in for it, and we had a surprise visit from someone that has been done Chemo for abit now. It made my day.

Next week Cheyenne has her CT on Tuesday(unsedated) and her MRI on Friday(sedated). Please continue to keep her in your prayers, treatments are over but the journey is not. We will not find out her results for 2 weeks, so it may be a trying couple weeks. If you see me please dont ask if I have gotten results. That just adds to the stress. I will post results when I get them.

Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-62849803926527623572013-06-11T01:00:00.000-04:002013-06-11T01:08:19.639-04:00Last Chemo complete-pics and videoI am having issues getting pictures to upload, sorry it has taken so long.
Cheyenne was delayed from wednesday night admit to thursday due to bed shortage at the hospital. We are rather fortunate because this has only happened twice. Some families have it happen on a regular basis.
Cheyenne had a consult with her plastic surgeon friday morning. Dr Choi recommended that we do Cheyenne's reconstructive surgery in 2-5 years. We were originally told 1 year post chemo, however because there is such a high risk of recurrance with rhabdomyosarcoma it would be wise to wait until we have had multiple clear scans. Because she has already had radiation to that area if it was to reoccure the only option is for removal/chemo. Each surgery leaves scar tissue and it would mean less skin for them to work with if she had to have subsequent surgeries.
Cheyenne got her chemo friday around noon. Once she was finished(you can't leave your room when getting chemo), she had to change her clothes and show off her 'all done chemo' outfit. I know some have already seen these pictures through facebook but for those who havent....
Thanks so much to all who have kept us in your prayers over the past year. We still have alot to deal with in the next few months and so now that we are done with chemo, we are going to spend the summer with follow-up appointments and doing things with our little family. We spent much of last summer in hospital and isolating ourselves from the 'germs'. Although this will be better it won't change overnight. Cheyenne will still have a poor immune system for up to 6 months.

She went this morning for her bloodwork and physical. She recovered well from her fever last week. Nothing ever came back from the bloodwork so it was more than likely viral. Hopefully we will be able to get a bed tomorrow night and she can get her last chemo on friday. I will keep you posted.Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-772965444321705512013-05-29T17:48:00.000-04:002013-05-29T17:50:04.159-04:00Week 45 completeI am happy to announce that Cheyenne was discharged from the hospital after receiving her chemo. Her bloodwork this morning had not changed any but they were okay because it also had not changed for the worse. Sometimes counts come up after transfusion and then go back down after a day.
We are headed back tomorrow afternoon for her follow up appointment with ENT, and then next monday for the ECHO of her heart. She will be in clinic wednesday for her counts and physical and if all is well she will be admitted at night fo her LAST chemo.
The kids are all glad to be home. Thank you for your continued prayers.Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-40954135579066888742013-05-28T11:31:00.000-04:002013-05-28T11:31:30.114-04:00update may 28 morningWe had a pretty uneventful night. We were up quite late because who knew that a blood transfusion gives you more energy than a shot of expresso. Cheyenne was bouncing around until 1am.
On the plus side she slept in until 1030 this morning.
I got her counts back this am. Her ANC has crept up to 0.1. This is encouraging, it means her body is starting to rebuild her bone marrow, hence her immune system is at least working. She is still neutropenic but 0.0 means there is nothing. Usually once Cheyenne starts to move up she rebounds quickly.
Cheyenne's haemoglobin has jumped up from 63 to 91. I wasn't really that impressed by the counts I thought it should be higher until the Nurse Practitioner told me most people only gain 10 points from a transfusion and some require another one the second day. So I will rejoice that this is not the case.
If Cheyenne continues to remain fever free she will have a 48hr(from last fever) blood culture taken tonight and if all is good we will be discharged tomorrow at some point. Before we go home the will give Cheyenne her vincristine chemo. That way we won't have to come into clinic on Thursday morning. That will save us some time. Thursday afternoon Cheyenne has a follow-up appointment with Dr MacLean(the ENT surgeon).
Thanks to those who continue to keep us in your prayers. It helps to know that so many are praying for you and you don't feel alone.Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-61086891532310267872013-05-27T22:57:00.002-04:002013-05-27T23:03:10.775-04:00update may 27 eveningCheyenne received her bag of blood around nine this morning. Because this was her first time they monitored her closely for reactions. This meant vitals done every 15 minutes for the entire 3 hours it took for her transfusion. Because it is done according to body size she didn't receive the entire unit but about 1/3-1/2. Cheyenne had no problem getting new blood because hers was sick. She was proud because she thought that getting blood was a badge of honour (just like her friend Crystal). Since she woke up from her nap this afternoon she has been wired and chatting up a storm with all the nurses. They are suprised by her turnaround from last night. At the moment as I type this she has disconnected her heart monitors and is using the oximeter and 2 straws and making monster sounds. The change is welcomed. Thanks to all who have been praying for us today and sending encouraging words. We appreciate it.Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-19560896012800190482013-05-27T08:31:00.003-04:002013-05-27T08:31:45.589-04:00update may 27 morningWe ended up in emerg last night with a neutrpenic fever. Turns out her counts were unreadable at 0.0. Coming in her hemaglobin was 90, but with all the fluid they gave her because she was dehydrated she dropped to 63. They are currently type and crossing her for a blood transfusion. This will be her first transfusion which is rare for oncology kids. They usually have had many by this point. Please pray for this mama because a ball of nerves wouldn't even begin to describe how I feel right now. Cheyenne has slept pretty well once she got into familiar ground upstairs. She just woke up and is quite puffy from all the fluids. Please pray that Cheyenne's transfusion will go well, without reactions and they will be able to find the source of her infection soon. Cheyenne headed to school tuesday and wednesday. She had a fall on the playground and hit her port. And yes, we hyperventilate about this. If it gets damaged or infected she would have to have it replaced. We headed to McMaster thursday to get an earlier look at it. It appeared to be ok and she got her chemo through it with no issues so we were happy.
Tonight putting Cheyenne to bed I noticed she was complaining of being cold and took her temp. She has a neutropenic fever(we are to call at 37.8), we called the oncologist and they said if it geta any worse I am to bring her in. I am to check it every couple hours. Last I checked it had come down to 37.7, so hopefully she can fight this without iv antibiotics. Please pray for continued strength as Cheyenne finishes her chemo. 2 weeks to go!Sonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14149209894293330635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6725170297331189646.post-76548224822282045892013-05-21T23:52:00.000-04:002013-05-21T23:52:40.678-04:00Week 43 completeAnother week has quickly passed along with another hospital admission for chemo. Last wednesday night Cheyenne was admitted to receive her chemo thursday. She was more tired than usual and slept most of the day. This was easier because we had the room to ourselves until almost midnight thursday. It was a pretty quiet admission because I tried to pack light and didn't bring my usual crafts. I have learned my leason and will pack it and leave it in the vehicle next time incase the opportunity arises. There is only so much Caillou one can watch and still be classified sane!
We were able to be discharged fairly early but by the time Cheyenne actually woke up and was ready to go it was almost noon. She bounced back pretty well and the kids have all enjoyed the beautiful weather over the weekend.
Cheyenne was able to go to school today and hopefully tomorrow aand thursdaay also. We head back to McMaster on friday for her small outpatient chemo. 3 to go!
Her counts were good (4.5) and they have a bed for her, so she will be getting hydrated tonight and chemo tomorrow. If all goes well she will be getting discharged home friday morning. The countdown is on. This is her second last chemo admission. She has 4 chemos left. The thought makes me giddy. Although we are nowhere done in terms of doctors appointments, follow-ups and tests/scans, I am ready to slow the pace down a little.
Here are some pictures of the last little while (as promised)
